Modernising Wills Industry Panel launches new podcast series exploring the future of Electronic Wills

The Modernising Wills Industry Panel has launched a new podcast discussion series, Modernising Wills – Reform and Reality, bringing together leading voices from across the legal and technology sectors to explore the practical realities of Electronic Wills reform.

The launch comes as conversations around the modernisation of Wills law continue to gather pace following the recommendations published by the Law Commission of England and Wales. While Electronic Wills are often discussed in principle, the Panel’s work is focused on examining what safe and trusted implementation could look like in practice.

The new series forms part of a broader programme of activity being led by the Panel, including roundtables, working groups and published recommendations aimed at supporting informed industry discussion.

Independently facilitated by Arken Legal, the Panel brings together representatives from legal practice, professional bodies and technology providers to consider the legal, evidential and technological implications of reform.

Episode One now available

The first episode, What is an Electronic Will?, is available now and explores one of the most fundamental questions at the centre of reform discussions.

Featuring:

  • Anthony Philips
  • Seb Shakh
  • Mev Dzihic

The discussion examines how the Law Commission currently envisages an Electronic Will, why definitions matter, and the evidential and technological principles that would underpin a secure and reliable system.

Speaking about the launch of the series, Anthony Philips said:

“The conversation around Electronic Wills is rightly gaining momentum, but meaningful progress depends on careful examination of the legal, practical and technological issues involved. The Modernising Wills Industry Panel was established to support that collaborative discussion, and this series is intended as one contribution to that wider work.”

Supporting informed industry discussion

Future episodes will explore a range of topics connected to Electronic Wills reform, including:

  • remote witnessing
  • reliable systems
  • contentious probate
  • storage and registration
  • international developments
  • adoption and implementation challenges

Each episode will also be accompanied by a published discussion paper summarising key themes, findings and emerging recommendations from contributors.

The series has been designed to support constructive industry-wide dialogue and help inform practical recommendations for the safe introduction of Electronic Wills within England and Wales.
